Museum:

The coming of the railways in the mid-19th Century brought about changes throughout the country, revolutionising the way in which people lived and worked at every level of the Victorian Society.

Construction took place over a very short period in time with the peace of the countryside shattered as vast armies of construction workers, "navvies", carved out the cuttings, embankments and tunnels which would carry the new lines.

Displays can be found throughout the Centre's 25 acre site with exhibits both large and small clearly interpreted. Orientation signs and a visitor trail leaflet will help you take a fascinating journey back in time.

The displays show in words, pictures and sounds how the advent of the railway age transformed the British way of life. Topics covered include: How the railways were built, Working on the railways - the Station master's role - the Signalman's story, How Royalty travelled, the railways during the war - evacuees, the first commuters, holidays by the sea and moving freight.
